The New York Cotton Exchange was formed by 106 cotton merchants and brokers in 1870. ... Because the Exchange's state charter specifies trading in cotton only, expansion to include trading in other commodities has been accomplished through the establishment of separate corporations. The first of these was the Wool Associates, founded in 1931. The next was the Citrus Associates, founded in 1966. 1971 saw the introduction of liquefied propane gas, governed by the Petroleum Associates. In September 1974, the Petroleum Associates began trading in crude oil.
